Care work jobs improve the lives of vulnerable people. You will work with people on a weekly or daily basis assisting them in practical activities such as going to the shops or helping people to bed. You will be visiting people in their own homes but it could be local to you and so transport is NOT essential. It is a very rewarding career and can be done on a contract, permanent or temporary basis and there are specific day and night care assistant jobs available.

  1. Caring for your clients, who can include: the elderly, people with disabilities and families; by assisting with medications to helping with household chores. There will be slight differences in the type of activities depending if you are working day or night.
  2. You may be liaising with people from other departments such as; social services, housing officers and GP’s, so you will need to have good communication skills.
  3. You will need to be sensitive to people of different backgrounds and be able to listen and communicate well with your clients.
  4. Generally you will need to be a caring and patient person

What qualifications would I need?

There are no formal qualifications that are required to apply for care work jobs, however any relevant work experience with looking after vulnerable people such as: the elderly, people with learning difficulties or other disabilities can help in a successful application. Training is completed on-the-job and covers everything from health and safety to specific care of a disability. As a care worker you can work towards a Health and Social Care NVQ/SVQ levels 2 and 3. 

The Induction with Caring for You will include training in the following areas; Health and Safety, Moving and handling, first aid, food hygiene, medication and safeguarding vulnerable adults.
